Chapter 25
Ricky Toy walked into the quadrangle through the breezeway that led from the parking lot. He was preoccupied and heard the girls before he saw them. Actually, he heard the dull whump of the diving board before he heard the girls. He looked across the parched grass to the pool and saw Lai coming up out of the water. Yue was lying on a rusty deck lounger with faded green plastic strips. There were three men sitting around in pool chairs talking to her. Lai crawled out of the water, and a guy with a frog white belly and a can of Pearl struggled out of his chair to give her a beach towel. Lai smiled radiantly and began patting her long bronze limbs with the towel. The guy with the Pearl forgot what he was doing and just stood there watching her.
Toy smiled and followed the sidewalk around the quadrangle under the balcony and under the stair landings that led up to the apartments on the second level, past the metal Burger Boy grill, the ragtag lawn furniture, yellowy potted plants put out to sun, a motorcycle being overhauled but temporarily abandoned, a ten-speed Vista chained to one of the landingâs support posts. He came to their apartment door and went inside, went straight to the refrigerator, and got a Tecate and a lemon slice. He sat down at the dinette table to watch the girls pump up the local boys at the pool.
They had been there a week now. It hadnât taken the girls long to make the place livable. Their sudden, if temporary, decline in living conditions hadnât depressed them. They were that incomparable combination so often seen in Asian women: deliciously feminine but surprisingly tough and resilient. They would always make the best of whatever life offered them. If it was abundance, they enjoyed it like true voluptuaries experienced in the creative pleasures of the Sybarites; if it was hard times, they endured with a silent stoicism that never despaired and that most people could not understand. Hong Kong ladies.
The day after they moved in, Toy changed the license plates on the cars and the girls went shopping in the Audi. He told them they werenât going to live in the apartment very long, so they had rented the furniture and had it delivered the same day. They scrubbed the place from top to bottom, washed the windows, shampooed the carpets so they could go barefooted on clean floors, made the air smell fresh. They bought plants. They stocked the kitchen. They settled in. Always upbeat, no matter what. Hong Kong ladies.
They hit the pool on the third day, and the good olâ boys came out of the woodwork like tree roaches. They gathered around to watch, couldnât believe their eyes, couldnât believe these two long legged, damn-near-naked gals had come to live in their little olâ âpartment complex. They couldnât believe it either when a guy named Roy who had steel wool on his
