Eric made it to dinner before Olivia noticed something wasnât right. He knew he had to tell her about the argument with Laura that morning, and heâd been rehearsing what heâd say all day. As he set the table, Olivia came in with a strange expression on her face.
âWhat happened to the wall by the door?â
Thatâs what he got for leaving signs of his anger behind. âI, uh, damaged the wall,â he said vaguely.
âHow?â she asked with a laugh. âIt looks kind of like â¦â She trailed off, her eyes on his right hand. It wasnât noticeably bruised, but his knuckles were red and a tad swollen. âYou punched the wall?â
He swallowed hard, then forced a smile. âLetâs sit down to dinner and Iâll tell you everything,â he said.
âButââ
âItâs a long story, Olivia,â he said, and she nodded. Moving together, they got their tacos plated and each took their seat at the small round table in the breakfast nook. Heâd thoroughly cleaned it after heâd gone down on Casper there, even though there hadnât been any mess. Heâd needed to do it, so he didnât cringe every time he saw his niece eating at the table.
âSo, what happened?â she asked.
Eric took a bite to give himself time to consider his words. He swallowed and took the plunge. âI hit the wall because I was angry.â
âWhy were you angry?â
âWell, your mom came by this morning, and we had a fight,â he said reluctantly. Olivia paled as he spoke, and he rushed to reassure her. âI didnât hurt her, I swear.â
Olivia shook her head. âI know you wouldnât.â
âIâm so sorry. This probably wonât make things any easier for you.â
Olivia picked up her taco, taking a bite. After a few minutes of eating quietly, she spoke up. âI got this weird message from my mom.â
Uh-oh.
âShe told me I should be aware youâre bringing strange men over here and um â¦â Oliviaâs face went red. âYou get the idea.â
âI do.â
âI thought she was just trying to stir up trouble or make me worry so Iâd go home,â Olivia said. âI know you donât bring strange men home. But now Iâm wondering, was someone here when my mom came over?â
Eric blushed. He lifted a hand to cover his face as he mumbled, âYeah.â
âWas it Dr. Rollins?â she asked. âYou guys seem to be hitting it off.â
Which was her tactful way of saying sheâd caught them sneaking kisses like a couple of kids, and probably looking ten kinds of guilty when sheâd arrived home early the other night.
Eric dropped his hands and looked her in the eye, even though he was uncomfortable. She deserved honesty.
âYes,â he said.
âSo, Dr. Rollins was here, and Mom came over and flipped.â She paused, an impish look on her face. âWas he dressed?â
âLivvie,â Eric exclaimed with a fresh rush of heat to his face.
Her eyes widened. âHe wasnât, was he? You hooked up with Dr. Rollins!â
âNo, he was just⦠He was in the shower when your mom got here,â Eric said, realizing he wasnât helping his case.
