Chapter Eleven

MR. KAPLIN had to reschedule Jordan’s interview once, so even though he should have started work on the farm today, he begged off so he could drive downstate to Medford. Beckett didn’t ask questions, and Jordan was grateful. Even though he’d made it clear that working on the farm would be a temporary situation, he didn’t relish the thought of having to explain to his current boss—and lover—that he was going on a job interview. Jordan told himself it didn’t matter, that both situations with Beckett were only for the short term, but he still felt weird about it.

He left before four thirty in the morning so he could make the nearly five-hour drive in order to be on time for his appointment at ten. Once Jordan hit the city limits, he carefully followed the directions past the medical center and to the warehouse that housed J & E Construction headquarters. Jordan needed to pay attention to where he was going, but that didn’t stop him from looking at his surroundings.

He liked Medford. It wasn’t as big as Portland, but it was still a thriving city. It managed to feel both quaint and modern—a lot like Newberg, actually, though it was definitely larger. It was a small town and big city at the same time.

Jordan squashed that thought as soon as he had it. He didn’t need to compare anything to Newberg. Portland was home, had been for his whole life. And even though he enjoyed the slightly slower pace and the wide-open spaces that the farm—and Newberg—had to offer, it didn’t mean anything. He had to decide if he could leave the bustle of Southeast Portland for the smaller Medford.

At least if he moved there, he might get a chance to visit Prescott Park and hike Roxy Ann Peak when the weather warmed up. John had been there once, and he raved about the view. Jordan would like to do it at least once, just to say he’d walked a volcano—even if it was dormant.

The Providence Medford Medical Center was undergoing an expansion, and half of the west parking lot was blocked off as the huge cranes lifted steel beams into place. Jordan had to wait in a small line of cars while a front loader drove across the road. Once it was clear, the construction guy lowered his handheld stop sign and allowed traffic to move again. Maybe they’d need someone on their crew if that job at J & E didn’t pan out. He filed it away. It looked like the construction would be going on for a while.

Jordan made it to his appointment with ten minutes to spare. His dark dress pants were creased from the long drive, and he was sure the back of his white dress shirt was wrinkled too. Jordan tried not to care about it. Mr. Kaplin knew he was driving down from Portland. Besides, Jordan was interviewing for a mechanic position. He figured the tie he slung around his neck was more than enough to make a good impression.
