CHAPTER 6
A KNOCK AT THE BEDROOM door drew Ginaâs gaze, and a moment later, Brigid poked her head inside the room. The fact sheâd knocked was out of character for how people had behaved around her this far in her young life. Sheâd never been given privacy for anything and didnât really understand the concept, though admittedly, it was nice. She had an awful lot of it here, her own bathroom even, and last night, sheâd laid in a tub of steaming water for an hour, unable to believe it.
âGood morning. I donât want to intrude, but if you feel up to it, I thought weâd go buy you some clothes.â
Clothing was an issue. Brigid had loaned her several items, but she didnât have Brigidâs curves and was shorter. Brigid buying her clothing, however, struck her wrong.
âI canât expect you to do that.â
Nothing was free. Though it seemed like Brigid meant it that way, the price for it was the load of guilt she carried. At least, working, sheâd bought what she had with money sheâd earned. She had no way to earn anything now.
âI figured youâd say that, so Iâm going to strike you a deal. I can use someone to clean up around the house and maybe later, when youâre feeling more up to it, at the newspaper. If thatâs okay with you, Iâll make a list of what Iâd like done and show you how ... in case, you have questions. For now, the clothing, your room and board and meals will be the payment.â
Clean up for her? Gina sat up taller. She could do that. Sheâd tried to keep house for Jack, but the environment didnât encourage her to make much effort. She twisted her gaze around the room. This, though ... this house made you want to treat it with kid gloves.
âIn the meantime, you must have something wear, so today, weâre going to take care of that. You dress and meet me in the foyer.â
Gina did the best she could, rolling the legs of a pair of Brigidâs blue jeans, a t-shirt tucked into the waistband to help them stay up. She put on her old sneakers, though they looked awful, and fixed her hair in a ponytail, staring at her bruised complexion for a moment before making her way out.
Brigid approached, taking her by the arm. âI have another idea,â she said. âLetâs go where the light is better.â She led her through the foyer into the living room, seating her beneath a lamp. She lifted a small zip bag and removed makeup foundation from it. âWeâre going to cover some of those so people donât stare so much. I know thatâs uncomfortable.â Dabbing foundation on a small square sponge, she applied it gently to her cheeks. âYou know ... you are a lovely girl. If you have any doubts, I saw the way Willie looked at you.â
Ginaâs face heated. Sheâd thought about him a lot, the last two days. Heâd said heâd come see her but hadnât yet.
