Chapter Nine

Liz pulled her scarf up over her chin. Chills tremored from her feet all the way to the tip of her nose. Driven by the vision of that sweet dog shivering alone in the descending dark, and the sight of George tearing up while talking in the kitchen, she moved forward. She took a deep breath again. That man certainly loved that dog.

While looking for Phil, she also kept a keen eye on Matt who wandered ahead calling for Phil and diligently checking every inch of ground with his light. How had she not realized his deep attachment for this dog? She didn’t want Matt to be hurt again by another accident. They really had to find this dog, alive.

“Matt.” She shouted and waved her light. “Matt, wait for me.” He kept calling for the dog and looking around him, but not back toward her. She walked forward. The only animals caught in her light were crows on low tree branches and some squirrels who scurried away. “Matt.” She shouted louder and got his attention.

He ran back to her at top speed, and she feared he’d trip. “Matt, be careful. Slow down, you might fall.”

Just as she said it, he fell hard, flat out against the ground. “Ow!”

Slow to get up, by the time she reached Matt, he’d made it onto his knees on his own. She kneeled next to him. “Are you okay? Anything hurting?”

He slowly shook his head, lips trembling. She wasn’t sure if he was cold or injured. “I’m okay. I thought you found Phil.”

She hugged him. “Not yet.”

He hugged her back, then picked up his flashlight where it landed next to a rock. “Good thing this is still working.” He stood, his lips in a tight line and his stare turned to furtive glances at the bushes surrounding them.

“Matt, we’re getting close to the road now, so I want us to stay together. Any cars won’t be able to see us very well as it gets darker. I don’t want to get separated.”

“You’re slower than I am, Mom.”

“Well then, I guess I’ll have to speed up, and you’ll have to slow down a little.”

They approached the roadway at the top of the hill and viewed the deep fall off from the shoulder into a ditch. Liz pointed. “I didn’t realize this drainage ditch followed all the way along the road like this. I thought it went underground at some point. This would be a deep canyon to a little beagle like Phil.” She played her light along the depths of the rocky, uneven surface. A thin river of water trickled through it.

Matt put his hand over hers on the handle of her light. “You know, Mom, I’ve gotten to know Phil and George pretty good playing card games, and talking, and over snacks and stuff. I’ve been thinking about why Phil would run away. He always stays close to George.”

Liz turned to face Matt. “Something outside must have made him curious. Maybe he wanted to go see something and if someone left the door open, he had an opportunity.
