After I relaxed and lost my grumpy mood, I started to appreciate the wit and charm Jules possessed. When she wanted to, she could pile it on. I was having a good time again and decided I could do worse than having a tasty breakfast, including a bite of her sandwich, with such an elegant and charming woman of just the right age.
Joining Jules for a couple of hours of bedroom delight appealed to me. I was genuinely sad to receive the phone call from Janice. My phone vibrated on the table next to the plate of grits that were so delicious I wanted to pick up the plate and lick it clean. If I were honest, Iâd had that same thought about Jules only two minutes earlier as she looked at me and that smoky stare had my juices flowing.
I noticed it was Janice and groaned, knowing why she would call me at this time in the morning. âHey, Janice, whatâs up?â
She got right to the point. âSick call. Amberâs not answering, or I would have asked her to cover the shift. Can you come in today for the lunch shift and work a double? Weâre desperate.â
I needed the money, so I looked across the table at Jules and tried to telegraph an apology. âSure, when do you need me?â
âHow about by 11:00? Will that work?â
âYeah,â I answered. âSee you in a few.â I ended the call and crinkled my nose wondering how I would break the news.
Jules lifted her brow. She remained silent. I suppose she was waiting for me to confess.
âThat was Janice, one of my bosses. Theyâre desperate and I need the money.â I offered this as an explanation for why I couldnât join her for more fun.
She plucked her cloth napkin from her lap and daintily blotted the corners of her mouth. âWell, that is a pity. I donât suppose there is anything I could do to change your mind?â
âJanice and Selene have done a lot for me. Iâll never be able to repay them for what they have done, so I couldnât say no. I hope you understand. Besides, I could use the extra money. Iâd like to eventually get a place of my own or at the very least move to a better neighborhood.â
âOf course, I understand. I would imagine extra barkeeping jobs at country clubs or other places would be a lot more lucrative than an extra shift at Sisters. I would be happy to provide your name.â She leaned in and smiled. Her smile did not reach her eyes. I couldnât tell if she was disappointed or furious. âAlthough, I would not wish for another person to capture your interest at one of these events. My friends can be predatory cougars.â
I grinned at her. âI canât imagine having any free time to spare between work and satisfying your every need.â
