CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

I ain and Ava rode their horses back towards the castle. They moved slowly as though neither one of them wanted to reach the location just yet. Iain wanted to be alone with Ava longer; he wished they could return to the cottage in the forest and spend another night together. Their night had been unexpected and powerful in too many ways.

He hated that their first night together, in that kind of way, was one where she thought he was someone he was not. Taking her to the barn was his first step in revealing the truth. He just didn’t think he was ready to tell her everything just yet.

The sun started to set behind them, and the air was heavy with fog. The waters from the recent storms still hung in the air, causing him to feel a moistness on his skin. They rode near the edge of the loch, taking the long way, so they could catch the reflection of the setting sun on the waters. As much as he wanted to stay with her in the quietness of the small village, he knew she had to return home.

Ava’s family was important to her; he could tell that much.

Even if they are like my own family, trying to make her into something she is not.

Iain wanted to be with her, he wanted to marry her immediately, but after realizing how quickly he was falling in love with her, he knew he needed to set some things right before they were to be together forever. Though he worried the truth would tear them apart.

Ava pulled her horse closer to Iain and rode alongside him.

“I dinnae want tae return, but I think tis best if I sort it all out,” she said without glancing at him.

“Yer family will be glad tae have ye back,” he responded.

“Aye, but I dinnae ken how things will change between us. I worry this is a thorn we cannae remove without leavin’ a big wound.”

He liked the way she phrased it. The way she spoke, he could see she was a healer through and through, and no one could take that from her. She deserved to be with a man who would let her continue down that path as long as she wished.

Finally, just as night began to spread across the sky, they reached the castle. Ava and Iain moved their horses into the stable, and Iain held her hand as he took her in through the main entrance and then moved towards the dining hall. He expected everyone to be there, given the hour of the day.

When they entered, Sophia immediately jumped up from the large bench and rushed to her. She pulled Ava into her arms and squeezed her tight.

“Oh, Ava, ye’ve returned. We were worried fer ye- ye ken how I am when me wee ones are away. I can only think of what might happen. Greta said ye mentioned runnin’ off tae yer aunts, but I ken it was a lie since yer sister and brother are already there.
