Chapter nine

“I’ve thought about it.”

“About my request for another two portable loo sites?”

“Very funny Kat. No, I don’t deal with that side of Dad’s business. That’s one of the perks of being his daughter. No poo. No wee. Just Facebook and Instagram.”

“Oh. Well, what have you thought about then?”

“You being a priest.”

Kat had the phone wedged against her ear while she finished typing an email to a confirm an appointment for her boss. She had thought about Ren, too, since coming back to Shoreditch after their meetings in The Cotswolds. Ren had made a less than subtle pass at her, which she had stopped in its tracks with her vocational declaration. Then Ren had got hopelessly stoned and Kat had seen her to her room, where she’d promptly fallen asleep.

She smiled to herself. “Oh! I’m glad you’ve thought about that. Is there anything I need to know about being a priest... as you’ve done some thinking about it? I must admit I was just in it for the money and did as little thinking as possible.”

“Ooh, you’re being wicked today, Kat. I was thinking more about things that I might need to know.”

Katrina sent the email and took the phone into her hand. “OK, well, ask away.”

“Can I ask some... personal questions?”

“You can ask, then I’ll decide if I’m going to answer.”

“Hmm, that’s what I thought you’d say.”

Katrina huffed into the phone. “Ren, ask.”

“Do priests think about sex?”

Kat laughed. “Is that a general religious-based question or are you asking if I think about it?”

“Do you?”

“I think I’d have preferred the theological question.”

Renata sighed. “All right, answer that one then. I mean, as long as you answer something.”

Kat stopped rummaging papers and sat back. “Yeah. They do. I mean rampant promiscuity might be frowned upon, possibly even sex before marriage in some parts, but ministers are humans.”

“And you?”

“I’m human, too.”

“I know... I’ve seen. Well, does it figure in your life?”

“Yes. It got me the sack.”

“OK, so this is the important someone in your life?” Ren latched onto the information.

“Yes. No. Not anymore. Ren, why are you grilling me on my hopeless love life?”

“It’s not that I think sex is the be all and end all of everything.” Ren picked her way further. “I mean I’d like to do other things as well.”

Katrina spluttered down the line. “Oh, so not entirely wham, bam, thank you ma’m?”

“Of course I’d like to see and do things with you. Talk to you... you know, like get to know each other, but...”

“But you want to know if it’ll be worth it... like, no sex... no talk?”

“No, I didn’t mean that... you know I didn’t. If we were just friends, that would be fine. Well, not fine, but I would accept it if...”

“...priests don’t do sex?”

“Kat, why are you making me suffer? I’m just trying to ask you out.”

“Is that what you’re trying to do? Why didn’t you say? I’d love to have sex with you.”

“You would?”

“Well I’m not sure about all that other stuff you mentioned, like the talking and so on.
