CHAPTER EIGHT
A cool chill ran through Roslyn and she wrapped her arms around herself in an attempt to ward off a shiver. âMy father? What about him?â
His gaze scanned her face and Roslyn noticed how even in the waning twilight, his blue eyes were vivid and oh, so striking.
âAbout contacting him and letting him know where you are,â he answered.
She tried not to gasp. Did Chandler honestly believe she ought to contact her father? If he did, it was because he didnât understand.
âNo. I havenât gotten in touch with him by phone or mail or any other way,â she stiffly. âAnd it will be a long time before I do.â
Silence followed her sharp reply and then he finally said, âI was just thinking that, well, now that youâve been here a while and had time to ponder about everything, that you mightâve had a change of heart.â
She was so surprised by his comment that she twisted around on the seat in order to face him head-on. âAre you joking, Chandler? A change of heart? Iâm sorry. I know heâs my father and I shouldnât have ill feelings toward him, but Iââ She shook her head. âI canât deal with him now. Heâd be threatening to take my baby, my money, everything I have just to pressure me back under his wing.â
âThatâs hard to believe. Why would he be that callous to his own daughter?â
She let out an unladylike snort. âBecause heâs a controlling man. Because my being pregnant and single, and now a runaway, has put a blight on his good name. He wants to try to smooth it all over. And having me home would make it appear that all was well within our family. What little is left of it,â she added bitterly.
âThat kind of thinking went out the door years ago,â he argued.
She nodded ruefully. âMy father is seventy now. Not that his age is an excuse. But he was raised in a different culture. Where women were expected to remain in the background.â
âPeople can change. And a baby has a way of changing a person,â Chandler gently suggested. âCould be that once your father gets a look at his grandchild his whole attitude will soften.â
A pang of regret hit Roslynâs chest. âThat would be wonderful, Chandler. But I donât much believe in fairy tales anymore. Do you?â
His hand slid up her arm and wrapped over the top of her shoulder. For a moment Roslyn thought he was going to pull her into his arms. Or, at least, thatâs what every fiber in her body was screaming for him to do. But instead, his fingers began to knead her flesh, which promptly sent rivulets of heat throughout her body.
âNo. But you hiding yourself away from your parent isnât good, Roslyn. Not for you or your baby.â
âMaybe it isnât,â she admitted. âBut Iâm not ready to risk this freedom I have right now, Chandler.â
He gave her a wan smile. âWell, talking about Dadâs death a few minutes agoâit made me wish better things for you, Roslyn.
