Sam faced himself in the mirror as he pinned the white carnation to his buttonhole. Something perhaps his best man or mother should have done for him on his wedding day, but he had neither. This was not a conventional marriage after all.
It was going to appear odd to the outside world who were unaware of his arrangement with Emmy that there would be no traditional âgroomâs sideâ but it did not seem right in the circumstances. Not least because he had minimal contact with his mother. Having her present simply for appearancesâ sake would not have made the day any easier. He was already a bag of nerves at the prospect of marrying Emmy without the added worry of his motherâs presence. Seeing her thereâa bitter, broken woman who was the result of his fatherâs behaviourâwould only impress on him the importance of not messing up the marriage or being a father. He was under enough pressure to make things work since he had talked Emmy into this crazy scheme.
Strangely, getting ready today felt very much like preparing for the real thing. He was nervous about getting the vows right and making this commitment. In putting himself forward as a suitable husband to Emmy, he was saying he would be there for her and the baby. That she could rely on him. In reality, he was praying that to be true when he had no practical experience of being a husband or a father. Roles he thought he would never have to prepare for, yet now he was taking on both, he would admit to some sense of excitement along with the anxiety.
A future with Emmy was not something completely abhorrent to him or he would never have proposed it. In fact, he was looking forward to having more than snatched moments with her without interruption from her family. A big part of him was secretly hoping they might develop a relationship beyond the façade when their partnership was so good in all other areas.
They were going to be spending a lot of time together for the foreseeable future, raising the child Sam never thought he would have. Now that fatherhood was a certainty there were aspects of that which appealed to him too. A chance to create the family neither he nor Emmy had been afforded growing up. Pride in his childâs achievements, being there for every milestone no matter how small and enjoying days out at the seaside or the zoo were all simple things he had been denied by his father but were things he was now looking forward to participating in.
As Sam pondered the happy occasions soon available to him if he chose to embrace his new path as a husband and father, today did not seem as frightening as it once had. Hopefully his future wife would come to the same conclusion.
