Grant stopped when he felt her dainty palms pressed against his chest. She was looking up at him, her eyes shining like stars in the moonlight, bewitching him. Her tongue grazed for a second time across her lips and his heart kicked, as if she had been skimming them over his skin.
âNo, Grant,â she warned him, her voice soft, breathless. âNot again.â
âWhy not?â He put his hands on her shoulders and saw the involuntary flicker of her eyelids as he ran his thumbs gently over the delicate collar bones. âWe are man and wife,â he murmured, lowering his head so he could place featherlight kisses on her cheeks. âHow can this be wrong?â
She melted into him without a sound and his arms tightened. It felt so good to be holding her again, breathing in her sweet perfume. He heard a soft sigh as she turned her face up, her lips seeking his, and when they met it sent a shudder through Grant. His heart was thudding a tattoo, the blood roaring in his ears as his body responded to the kiss.
Her tongue darted and teased, tangling with his, sending the heat coursing through his aroused body. He ran his hands over the bodice of her gown, wanting to rip away the padded silk and expose the soft flesh beneath, but he resisted. Instead, he caressed her neck, his fingers gently stroking the smooth skin.
She moaned against his mouth, pushing her breasts hard against him as if begging for his touch. He obliged, his fingers gliding over the smooth swell and slipping beneath the lacy edge of her chemise. He felt the slam of desire when they reached one hard, erect nub. He was overwhelmed with memories of lying together, their naked bodies writhing, mouths exploring, teasing, the passion mounting between them until they were both riding high on a cresting wave of passion. He pulled her even closer and deepened the kiss.
âNo. I cannot do this, Grant!â She struggled against him. âPlease, let me go.â
Her sudden, anguished cry broke the spell and brought him back to the present. He released her quickly, the distress in her voice overriding desire and rousing a strong protective instinct.
âWhat is it, sweeting?â
He held on to her hands, aware of how tightly she clung to his fingers, as if afraid she would collapse if she let go. His body was screaming for him to drag her back into his arms and he fought against it. She had not repulsed him, but she might still do so, for she looked truly distraught. He tried hard to speak gently.
âThere is no sin in what we are doing, Maddie. Although...â he looked about him and gave a shaky laugh, trying to lighten the mood â...Lady Thanetâs terrace is perhaps not the place I would have chosen for our reunion.â
She did not even smile.
âThere will be no reunion, Grant,â she said, disengaging her hands. âIt is too late for that. You must forget about me.â
âForgetâ!â Her words made no sense.
