CHAPTER TWENTY
âYOUâRE IN THE PAPER,â Nicole said when she came over the next afternoon. âYouâve got to see this picture.â
Laura had just gotten home from her job at the beach and she wanted to shower off the sunscreen and sand. She loved the beach, but each passing day reminded her that she really needed to get a grown-up job if she was planning to stay in Cape Pursuit.
âIâm glad youâre here,â Laura said. âI have a plan to run past you, and I know you well enough to know that youâll be brutally honest with me if you hate it.â
âArenât you going to look at the article?â Nicole said. She got two cans of soda out of the fridge and opened the kitchen door to the back porch.
âFine,â Laura said. She sat in one of the chairs on the back deck and opened the newspaper. âOkay,â she said. âWow. I guess I see what youâre talking about, but I donât even remember anyone taking this picture.â
âYou were busy saving babies,â Nicole said.
âJust one.â
The picture was of the moment Laura had knelt on the ground outside the burning house and opened the front of her coat to reveal a baby wrapped in a towel. The caption below gave Lauraâs name and stated she was a new member of the department.
âPoor baby Melanie,â Laura said. âI hope she doesnât remember any of this.â
âShe wonât. But her family will never forget it.â
The sisters were silent for a few minutes as they watched the bird feeder and drank their soda on the quiet late afternoon day.
âAdam would be proud,â Nicole said.
Laura fought tears. Despite the incredible emotion of the night before and the chatter about her heroism all day long at work, she had kept her feelings in check and tried not to think about what could have happened. What did happen to someone her family loved very much.
âDonât make me cry,â Laura said.
Nicole sat back in her chair and put her feet up on the deck railing. âI talked to Mom and Dad today,â she said. Laura felt her heart sink. âI told them what happened last night. They got online and saw the picture and article on the newspaper website while we were still on the phone together. Of course there was a lot of swearing because dad has a new laptop and he says he canât get used to it, but I eventually got them to the front-page story in the Cape Pursuit News.â
âWhat did they say?â
âThey said you were a hero, they accepted your decision to be a firefighter and they wanted grandchildren,â Nicole said.
âWhat?â
âThat last part was for me since Iâve been married a week and a half now, but I think the picture of the baby inspired it.â
Laura wanted to laugh, but she knew there would never be a better time to tell her sister what had been on her mind for two long years. âItâs my fault Adam is dead.â
Nicoleâs mouth opened in shock for a moment and then she shook her head.
