CHAPTER SEVEN
A few hours later, Cody looked at Tinsley, tucked into her chair, black-framed glasses on her pretty nose. Her fingers raced across her tabletâs small keyboard, and noticing that she was in the zone, he decided he needed more coffee. She didnât notice when he stood up and headed for her kitchen.
It was snowing hard outside, and the wind had picked up. Wonderful. He couldnât wait for winter to be over. He wanted the heat of summer, to feel the sun on his skin. If he wasnât so swamped, heâd head down to the Caribbean and dive in those warm waters, doze in the sun and sleep with his windows and doors wide open, cooled by island breezes.
But he had too much to do here, too many responsibilities. And heâd gathered one more: Tinsley and her baby. His baby. Theirs.
Cody glared at the coffee machine. Heâd spent the past week digesting the news, trying to make sense of the turn his life had taken. Initially, heâd wanted to be angry, but spending New Yearâs Eve together had been a choice theyâd both made. While heâd used a condom, he knew that abstinence was the only foolproof means of contraception. Abstinence had never been an optionâhe liked sex, dammitâso heâd taken his chances, rolled the dice and for twenty years or so heâd won against the house. This one time, with his ex-sister-in-law, heâd lost.
Sheâd all but given him permission to walk away, to be an anonymous sperm donor. Sheâd told him she was happy to be a single mom and yeah, heâd be lying if he said he wasnât initially, briefly tempted to walk away. After raising JT, being responsible for his brotherâs welfare at such a young age, heâd vowed never to put himself in the position of looking after anyone but himself again.
He looked at Tinsley again, taking in her thin face and tired eyes. The pregnancy was hard on her, anyone could see that, but he admired her just-push-through-it attitude.
She was a strong woman and he admired strength, tenacity, the ability to keep on carrying on.
In some ways, they were very alike. Driven, determined, stoic. They both demanded too much, liked getting their way.
And, despite the big complication of the pregnancy and having to work together, he was still insanely attracted to her, to this woman who made him feel scratchy, off-balance and out of sorts. Since New Yearâs Eve, he just had to think of her and his heart sped up and his lungs forgot how to do their job. He recalled, in Technicolor detail, every kiss, the silkiness of her skin, her breathy voice in his ear telling him how good he made her feel.
And when he was with her, he couldnât keep himself from touching her, partly from desire, but also because in his arms was where he needed her to be. In his arms, she could relax, and she could rest. Tinsley raised his protective instincts and he couldnât work out why.
