Didenur sat down on a sofa and took several deep breaths to regain her composure. She suddenly recalled the time Servetseza had broken a beautiful china doll that a Danish princess had given to Aliye Sultan. The doll had been a favorite toy of the Ottoman princess, but she would occasionally allow Didenur and Servetseza to play with it, too. One day, while the three of them were âplaying nurse,â Servetseza put the china doll on an end table to âexamineâ it. As she was taking the dollâs âtemperature,â Servetseza bumped the table and the doll rolled off and broke on the floor. Without the slightest sign of anger, Aliye Sultan had said, âThank God, what broke is just a doll!â Then she turned to Servetseza, who was crying, and just to make her feel better, the little princess said: âDonât cry, my beautiful sister, I didnât like that doll anyway.â
Comparing the two events, Didenur felt todayâs incident was a sign â a sign indicating that it was time for her to move on in life. If she stayed on at the palace, there were only two options open to her. She would either have to accept the unacceptable and bow to Juret Hanımâs overbearing personality, or try to struggle against this young womanâs capricious nature. But Didenur knew that such a struggle was full of risks. After all, the new consort currently had the Sultan on her side. In addition, the Valide Sultan obviously had been taken in by the young woman and had recommended the cariye to her son. Didenur was sure that in the long run Juret Hanım would get her just desserts; she believed in divine justice. She knew that sooner or later the seeds of our actions sprout, in time grow into fruit-bearing trees and eventually return to us in the form of fruit â bitter or sweet - depending on the seeds we plant. But for now, neither of the two options open to her at the palace appealed to Didenur. Her only other option was to ask to be married and leave the palace to start a new life. Didenur made her decision.
