HOW TO GIVE A GOOD PARTY

• Invite people – I always think an empty room with no people ruins a party.

• Do proper invitations, and print them. An email is cheating. People do like a stiffy on their mantelpiece.

• Food and drinks, obvs, but do try to think of an extra attraction – a quiz, a treasure hunt, a film show, a game, a record player with vinyl records from the olden days, i.e. the 1960s.

• People don’t have to take part. They can just sit and watch, scoff and mutter how naff, then possibly how funny, what a good idea, puts my party to shame and yes, I will have another glass.

• Going-away presents, original, but cheap and amusing. Remember that most oldies are children at heart, except for their bad back.
