Chapter Six
Dominic closed his eyes for a moment. That wasnât what heâd been expecting to hear. He wasnât even sure Julian was aware heâd been dating a shifter, or he wouldnât have freaked out when he learned of Dominicâs bear. He wouldnât have been baffled as to how a wolf could pull him from under the bed by his ankles.
âIt was Robert who broke into your house and attacked you.â
Julian remained quiet for so long that Dominic wasnât sure what to think.
His mate finally took a deep breath. âAre you saying I was dating a shifter?â
âYes.â
âButâ¦how?â Julian asked. âHow would I not know I was dating a shifter?â
âCould you tell that I was one?â Dominic asked. âUntil you saw my bear, did you have a clue?â
âNo,â Julian said, though he sounded resigned, as if he should have been able to tell. He looked up at Dominic. âRob was a real asshole, butâ¦his fatherâ¦â
Dominic frowned. âWhat about his father?â
Turning over, Julian looked up at Dominic. âEzekiel was even more of an asshole. He worshipped his son, loved him to death.â Julian bit his lip as he wrinkled his brows. âI had no idea they were wolf shifters. Iâm no expert in your world, but Ezekiel is going to want revenge for what happened to Rob.â
Dominic knew that was true. If Ezekiel wasnât going to let the death slide. Especially if he worshipped his son. Not that Dominic had anything against wolves, but they were dominant, prideful, and sometimes arrogant creatures. Then again, so were most shifters, including bears.
He had to warn Denali. He was the one whoâs shot the wolf and killed him. Ezekiel would blame Julian, and also Dominic, because he was sheriff, but when he discovered who killed his son, hell would be unleashed.
Not that Dominic knew Ezekiel, but he would want blood and wouldnât care who he killed in order to avenge Robert.
âThereâs something I donât understand,â Dominic said as he traced circles on Julianâs back. âWhy did Robert attack you?â
âHe was an asshole, a jerk who cheated on me, but he thought I should obey his every word. I broke things off with him, but Rob acted as if I never had. He still came around, still harassed me, and thatâs when I moved. To get away from him.â
Men like Robert couldnât take the blow to his ego. He was the type that could end things, but to have someone quit him was unthinkable. Dominic sighed, grateful Julian was safe and in his arms. But he knew that they had only just begun to deal with the ramifications of the attack. Ezekiel was still out there, and he would be coming for revenge. They would have to prepare themselves for whatever the guy might bring.
Too bad Dominic hadnât known how to contact the next of kin. He would have told the father about his sonâs death. It was the right thing to do, but now that he knew Ezekiel would want revenge, Dominic hoped the guy didnât come to town.
