They worked together throughout the winter, into spring, and Antonin’s name was never mentioned. Caroline longed to ask Max but felt she must wait. When the time comes, he will tell me, she said to herself as the days passed, sensing a dark thing had happened, and that Max and Elsa and even Mikhail knew, although not one of them would speak of it.

She was only partially right. Antonin’s fate since the stabbing was unknown to them all. There had been only two calls – one from Simon Rand, anonymous, to the hospital – one from Antonin to his mother, from a public phone booth on the highway. That he was armed, and had robbed twice, and was desperate, nobody knew. He had merely assured Elsa that he was well, and would be gone for a while.

Not for a moment had Max believed it. He knew Antonin’s nature – fierce in his affections, volatile in his anger, easy prey to those who would offer help in exchange for unholy dependence. Forced to move now among them, Max knew, Antonin was at risk. Yet of his concerns he said never a word.

Neither did he ever mention that he knew Caroline spent her rest time at the hospital each afternoon. After all, he now understood, he owned a part of this woman no one else could ever claim. He would wait. There was much to be done still. He was accustomed to waiting, feigning forbearance.
