Chapter 18 – Spy Failure

Sparks’ Viewpoint

When I got back to our home base with the new clothes, Jazz applied several temporary tattoos on my wrist and neck to help me fit in. We waited a few hours until shortly before dark, and then I prepped for my night as a spy.

She made me put on far heavier makeup than normal. The white of my eyes popped against the thick black eyeliner and eyeshadow. I felt like I was primping for a date or something and griped.

Jazz said, “You’re going out to a nightclub. You want to look like you actually mean to be there.”

I replied, “I’m just going there to meet this Aaron guy, get him in a room, and get some answers about this Sharae woman.”

“Still, why chance blowing your cover, or not being allowed in?”

“Yeah, like they’re going to turn down a paying customer.”

“You said he works there?”

“That’s what Dimmer said.” I put on a black bra, and then put on the red fishnet shirt over the bra.

“Is he a bartender or server?”

“No idea. The F.B.I. doesn’t know much more than that he’s a good contact. Oh, he did say to ask for an appointment with him. He can’t be a bartender if that’s true.”

“Unless he serves private parties.”

“What, am I supposed to book a party room? That would look strange if I just show up and want to get a room. Besides, Dimmer said he won’t talk for under a grand.”

“The website showed something about personal services, like massage. Maybe he does that. Ooh, if you get to have a body massage I’m going to be pissed that I didn’t get to go with you.”

“I guess I wouldn’t mind that. I’m not sure, I mean, letting some strange guy run his hands all over me?”

Jazz smiled, “It sounds great to me. Maybe I should take a break tomorrow and hit a spa for a day.”

I slid on my new, black leather pants and my favorite low-heel black boots.

She watched me, and said, “Those don’t exactly look like you’re trying to say ‘I’m sexy.’”

“I might get into a fight.”

“The whole point is to get information. Remember, the entire ‘investigate’ part?”

“No way, I hate heels. They’re dumb.”

“Fine. You’re the action star.”

I put my over-the-shoulder holster that rested on my left side, inside the jacket. Jazz stopped me before I put on the belt holster.

She said, “That’s a little too obvious.”

I sighed. “I’ll put it on the bike, then.”

“That’ll work. You park on the roof?”

“That’s the plan. There’s a good one across the street and down a few buildings. All right, everything look good?” I checked myself in the mirror. My new jewelry had little spikes, skulls, and a cross around my neck. I wore a ring with a little faerie.

Jazz said, “We could dye a black stripe in your hair.”

“No way.”

“Have it your way. You look smokin’. If you weren’t meeting someone, I bet that you’d find someone hitting on you tonight.”

“No thanks. I’d break a normal guy in half with my legs, and there aren’t that many supers out there to choose from.
