The lights were off when I stepped inside. It took me a moment to realize I had left my backpack at the gym in my haste to escape. Groaning, I pressed my forehead against the cool wooden wall of the entryway. My lips still tingled from my makeout with Ian. The feel of Kieran's body behind my own. The remnants of Ty’s tongue in my mouth. The comfort and safety I felt sandwiched between Leroy and Luke. Dorian’s presence, never judging me and never demanding more than I was willing to give. And even Hayden, for reasons I couldn’t quite understand.
Why did my life have to be such an epic shit show? These types of things weren’t supposed to happen to someone as insignificant as me. Gang wars, sexy men, demons, murderous sisters.
I couldn’t discern if it was fear I felt or anger.
My emotions were everywhere, my mind unable to latch on one specifically.
What did I know?
I had a dangerous gang after me because of my relationship (if you could even call it that) with Ty and Ian. And probably because of my friendship with Phoebe. I didn’t know how far they were willing to go to prove that I was somehow involved in Dom’s disappearance.
And then there was Karissa and the Shadow Man. Was there a way to save my sister? Or was she lost to me?
I went through all of the information I had gathered so far on the Shadow Man. He was a high-level demon and a part of the underworld. The underworld…or hell? I was still unsure if the two were interchangeable. The Shadow Man was able to enter the material plane because he was tethered to a death kissed individual.
I rapidly flickered through all I had learned about death kissed people. They had been humans inches from death, thus becoming one with the spiritual plane. Because of that connection, a demon - or a shadow man (not the Shadow Man) - was able to cross the distance between realms and intertwine their lives to the death kissed in question.
A revelation came to me then, and I staggered.
Was I the death kissed individual keeping the Shadow Man on the material plane?
Nausea swarmed in my stomach threatening to expel the contents of my lunch. Taking a deep breath, I pushed myself off the wall and ventured tentatively into the living room. I couldn’t deal with my own thoughts, my own emotions, without completely falling apart.
“Papa?” I called in the dark room. I knew that Dad was at the hospital with Colt, preparing him for another surgery. But where were Karissa and Papa? And Jaron and Fiona?
Frowning, I pulled my phone out of the waistband of my pants, switching it on.
