Chapter 13
The LA Cocaine Caper
WHILE THE Organisation was in trouble in its last operations area, the United Kingdom, its credit damaged by having supplied diluted heroin, Clark flew off to Los Angeles. The basic purpose seems to have been to pick up with Karen Soich, who was giving up her career to join Clark and make a new life with him. But with his usual capacity to deal with several emotional problems at once, Clark also had installed Maria and Jarrod in an upstairs suite in the same hotel. As well, Sally, his first wife, flew in, bringing their 12-year-old daughter. For good measure Leila was to arrive to talk business. In addition, there was also an English actress, Jane, who had come to Hollywood to establish a career for herself. The night before Karen arrived, Clark picked up Roxy, a black street whore. She was something of a departure for Clark, being dumpy, about five feet tall and sporting a bare midriff and a pink leotard. She was also an indulgence who was to prove expensive to him. Clark paid Roxy rather well and also gave her some money to buy coke for him.
Roxy went back to her pimp, one Benjamin Bennett, otherwise known as Benji, with the news of a big spender
from the Antipodes who was throwing money around. Benji was said to have some connection with drug dealers, but in fact he was only a very small-time pimp with two girls. However, seeing an opportunity, he was prepared at once to act out the role of a big man with big connections, and rang Clark at the Beverley Hilton, introducing himself as a friend of Roxy’s. Subsequently he went out onto the street, scored some coke, and then bravely went to meet Clark in the bar of the hotel, the coke hidden in his socks.
After drinks he and Clark went off to the suite to snort, but Clark expressed disappointment with the quality. He
explained that his object had been to get in touch with a supplier. Benji was cautious about dealing in large amounts and Clark was quick to detect the fear that he of all people was a police set-up. ‘Benji,’ he said, ‘if you think I’m the police, we can kill everything here and now. You don’t think the fucking police would snort?’ To prove himself a big man Clark took out a case full of bank drafts and statements from the UK, Australia, New Zealand and other places. Some drafts showed values of A$100,000, and others of $500,000 and there were credits and accounts of between $4 million and $7 million. A figure of A$23 million was tossed into the conversation. Finally, Benji courteously announced that he believed Clark. Still talking, Clark explained how he handled drugs in kilo lots and above, and how his business extended to England, Australia, New Zealand and Italy. Benji quoted a going price of US$65,000 a kilo for cocaine in Los Angeles and Clark assured him that that would be acceptable and that he would buy 100 kg.
