Monday morning came as quickly as it always did.

The weekend had been enjoyable, and the only time that Jack had allowed thoughts of the box to intrude was when he’d given the Brick-A-Brack shop a glance as they’d walked up the high street. No lights shone behind the dusty windows and the closed sign hadn’t moved since he last looked. It had a feeling of abandonment, almost as though Garret had never been there at all.

This was Jack’s first full week as a partner and his email inbox was full of new projects to manage. He’d also been moved to a far more salubrious office, one with a view of the town from the large windowed rear wall. If he hadn’t had the niggling doubts about what had happened to Liam he’d have been over the moon with his new elevated position.

The other fly in his ointment was Roger.

As the week rolled on it was increasingly noticeable that Roger had a hard-on for him, and not in a good way. Jack would be working away and feel a pair of eyes on him, looking up he’d find Roger glaring at him through the glass front of his office. Always making sure he caught Jack’s eye before stalking away.

At Jack’s first partner’s meeting, he’d been asked to speak about a project that was overrunning and what actions he was taking to get it completed as soon as possible. This wasn’t a project that Jack had been involved with before his promotion, however, he’d found several issues that he could work on that would resolve the hold-up.

Feeling confident about his findings and solutions he’d spoken confidently to the other partners, most of whom had nodded appreciatively.

Apart from Roger, that is.

Roger sat at the head of the table, and as the most senior partner, he had the final say on most things. He’d given Jack the dead eye throughout his presentation while tapping his pen impatiently on the pad in front of him. When Jack wrapped it up, Roger snorted derisively.

“That all sounds like excuses to me. More work, that will take more time, and make this project even more delayed than it already is. We need this closing as a matter of urgency before the client goes elsewhere.”

Jack had felt the heat rise to his face; all the other partners had turned to look at him to see how he responded.

“Unfortunately, there'd been some elements missed on the project originally which led to missing the deadline. I’ll have another look and see if there’s anything that can speed it up though.”

Roger narrowed his eyes and leaned forward in his seat, the red veins in his nose throbbing and his bushy eyebrows twitching in irritation.

“Any excuse to have a dig at Liam, even though he’s not here to defend himself. I expect it suits you to lay the blame at his doorstep. I’ll expect any updated plans in my inbox by end of play today.”

Jack managed to nod his agreement, his stomach clenched
