Chapter Seven

JOE RED FEATHER watched in grim satisfaction. This Golden Hawk was not invincible, after all. Barely able to keep up with the Comanche pulling him along, he was continually pitching forward to the ground, allowing himself to be dragged for long, grueling stretches before struggling back up onto his feet.

Not until nightfall did the Comanches make camp. Watching from a ridge, Joe Red Feather decided it was a good time for him to return to his own camp and see to the Crow woman he had taken the day before. He found her waiting for him, still unhappy and glowering, her hands securely bound behind her. He dragged her upright and flung her against a tree, then bound her to it with strips of rawhide. As he tied the last knot, she tried to kick him in the groin. He stepped back and casually slapped her about the head and shoulders until blood ran from her nostrils.

Then he left her and slipped silently back down through the timber. When he came within sight of their camp, he saw how well the Comanches entertained their captor. Their torments were ingenious. Watching Golden Hawk take his punishment filled Joe Red Feather with a deep, savage excitement. Soon he would be doing the same to Golden Hawk— all the way back to Blackfoot country.

Exhausted finally, the Comanches prepared their beds and Joe Red Feather moved back up through the timber.
