With the Annemarie problem dealt with, all Speer had to do now was come to grips with the other far more horrifying dilemma that had just been thrown in his lap.

It all started with the postcard he received from Karl Hanke. The raunchy picture on it was highly inappropriate considering the serious subject it broached. He couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow and smile in amused resignation when he saw it. A smile that fell quickly from his face when he started reading:

‘Greetings Golden Boy. I’d like to say I’m having a wonderful time on holidays and wish you were here, but instead want to give you a word of warning. If anyone suggests that you visit our works at Auschwitz, give it a miss. Do you actually know what goes on there? I had no idea and it’s probably better that you never find out. You haven’t the stomach for it my friend. I could have done without making that gruesome detour Heinrich Himmler suggested I take. It was enough to put me off my dinner, not to mention what’s left of my leave. I’ll be back soon to fill you in on all the gory details, if you can stand them. See you then, Karl.’
