Chapter Twenty-Three
Shopping had turned sour. It was nobody's fault; just a gradual realisation on Dianaâs part that something was shifting within her. Every topic of conversation had her mind wandering back to Shannon. And every time it did, it wandered further to memories of kissing her, and the last time sheâd seen her, when kissing had become a heavy petting session that had taken them both by surprise.
âWhatâs wrong with you?â Zara had nudged her when they met back up for a break and a coffee together.
âHm, what?â Diana said absently as the fog of fantasy dissipated.
âYouâve been stirring that coffee for three minutes.â
âDonât exaggerate.â Claudia smiled. âIt was barely two, but Zaraâs right, is everything okay?â
Diana looked around the table at the three pairs of eyes currently staring at her, waiting for an answer, concern on all of their faces.
âYes, of course.â
âNot very convincing,â Zara muttered, picking up her iced salted caramel latte and sipping through the paper straw.
âIâm fine. I was just thinking, thatâs all.â
âAbout what?â Zara continued her cross-examination with a slight smirk on her face. âAre you thinking aboutââ
âFirstly, Zara, itâs none of your business, and secondly, itâs none of your business,â Diana said, feeling a little irked at the interrogation.
âOo, touchy,â Zara continued to prod.
âZara, pack it in,â Scarlett spoke up before Claudia could admonish her youngest daughter.
âFine. I was just having some fun.â
âYes, at my expense as usual,â Diana snapped. âYou do know that sometimes it hurts my feelings.â
Zara sat up, her attention moving to her sister. The sister she loved dearly. âDi, Iâm sorry, sometimes I forget that banter isnât your forte.â
âBanter is my forte, I just choose who to banter with and know when itâs appropriate.â
Claudia reached for Dianaâs hand. âDo you need to get some air? I could do with stretching my leg. Iâm supposed to exercise it now the cast is off.â
Diana huffed and stood up. âSure.â
As they walked away, Scarlett stared at Zara. âWhy do you wind her up like that?â
Zara shrugged. âI dunno, weâve always done it. She knows Iâm only being playful.â
âThat may be, but sometimes I think she needs us to be serious and give her the space to tell us whatâs on her mind.â
âI know whatâs on her mind, or should I say, who.â
âThen even more reason to give her a break and let her work her thoughts out without feeling like sheâs the butt of everyoneâs joke.â
Picking up her coffee, Zara sat back and slurped the last remnants of it from the bottom of the cup. âDo you think thatâs how she feels, like sheâs a joke?â
Scarlett nodded. âSometimes, yes.â She leaned forward. âThink about it, whoâs the one person who has been there for you other than your parents?â
âDiana, I guess Adam, too.â
âRight, and you never have to ask her to step up, she just does it and gets it done and you both know that she will, but instead of just saying thanks, you and Adam make little jokes at her expense.â
âNot all the time.
