“Dee? Dee, are you there? Pick up the phone, Dee! Please! This isn’t the sort of thing you discuss over a text message!

I’ve had more conversations with your voicemail this week than with you. I tried calling like 10 times already. I even left a message at your school. I don’t know where you are. Maybe your class has organized kindergarten revolution and they’re holding you hostage! I don’t know! I didn’t want to tell you this over a message, but I guess I don’t have much of a choice.

Listen. I’m headed back to the hospital. I’m fine. Totally fine. I want to... No, Billie! Now is not the time to tell her how pretty she is! What are you even doing here? As I was saying, Dee, I’m okay. But Owen... I don’t know how to say it other than to just say it... Owen was shot. And in case you’re going to ask the same question your brother asked, no, I did not shoot him.

We were at the gas station and it got held up. The guy shot the clerk while Owen and I hid in the back, but he found us. He tried to shoot me too, but he missed... yeah, Billie! I know it was Tucker! I just assume now that when my life turns to crap, at least one of you is behind it.

Anyway, the guy shot Owen and ran. The cops caught him one street over, the EMT said, but Owen... he’s lost a lot of blood. There wasn’t room in the ambulance, so they wouldn’t let me ride with him. I can’t drive with one arm, and I haven’t been able to pick up my rental car yet, so I had to call a cab to take me to the hospital. I gave my statement to the police while I waited, but they couldn’t tell me whether or not he was going to be alright. The EMTs were doing their best... but... Dee, I don’t know if he’ll pull through.

I’ve never seen him like that. He was so scared, Dee. He hit the ground and... there was so much blood. I’m scared, baby. I keep thinking he’ll die and my last moments with him were spent trying to trick him into drinking carrot juice.

I know this is a lot to process in a single voicemail. And I know it doesn’t make sense. I just really need to hear your voice. I need you to tell me that this will all be okay... Not you, Billie! I did not ask you to ride with me! Just get out!

I probably sound insane right now. I sure feel like it. And I’m sorry, but this... this sort of thing... it’s just a part of my life. I feel like I’ve been shouldering a curse my entire life, and nightmares follow me around. Except they’re not nightmares. They’re real. This is my life, Dee, and every good moment I have with someone I love is just another step down a road that will lead to their destruction.
