Stuart and Allen walked to the courtyard. Allen called out to his men, “Mount up!”

Stuart asked, “What about Hadi?”

“Who?”

“The kid from the shop.”

“What about him?”

“We can’t just leave him.”

“He’s a kid, not a puppy.”

“It’ll just be until we can find his family. What if that shop owner comes looking for him?”

“The quarters next to yours in P-quad are empty. He can stay there for now, but you’re responsible for him.”

“Agreed.”

Stuart and Babauta climbed into their Humvee. Hadi sat on a pile of gear between them. Half way back to Bernstein, the boy slid into Stuart’s lap and fell asleep on his shoulder.

Gravel crunched and popped under their tires as they pulled into the quad. Babauta helped put the child to bed in the billet next to Stuart’s.

After Hadi was settled, Stuart hurried to his quarters, locked the door, and seized the statuette from Hadi’s bag.

He ran his hands over the black stone – still warm from the day’s heat. He stared into its monstrous eyes.

What are you?

He eagerly eyed the characters etched around the base. Stuart didn’t recognize the language. He grabbed a pencil and meticulously copied the inscription onto a notepad. It felt good. It felt right. For the first time in years, Stuart felt like an archaeologist.
