Chapter 10

The dew on the grass soaked through the fabric of Cheryl’s skirt. She knelt by the side of the road with her hands on her head, crying. She knew this was no time or place to break down like this, but so many things had been going wrong. Losing Chloe again was too much to bear. Her car sat on the side of the road with the driver’s door flung open. She was so distraught that she didn’t even notice the small SUV that pulled up behind her or the woman getting out of the car. The woman squatted down next to Cheryl and asked, “Are you okay?”

Cheryl could barely hear the woman speaking because her mind was so consumed by her thoughts.

“Is there someone you want me to call for you?” the woman asked. She placed her hand on Cheryl’s shoulder, and Cheryl jumped reflexively. The woman came into focus for the first time.

Cheryl shook her head. Just then, her phone rang. She looked at it as if she’d never seen it before. She didn’t reach to pick it up from the ground next to her leg. Instead, the woman picked it up. “I’m going to answer this, okay?”

Cheryl nodded.

She watched as the woman explained to whoever was on the other end where they were and what was happening; Cheryl was trying desperately to figure out where Chloe could have gone. There was a place that both she and Adam had been to before—an empty place between the world of the living and the dead. She wondered if Chloe was there and if she could go there herself.

The woman stopped talking on the phone. Now she was saying something directly to her. Cheryl looked at her, pushing the tears from her eyes. She needed to focus. If she completely fell apart, how would she ever be able to help find Chloe?

“I just talked to Adam. He says he’s your boyfriend. I hope that’s correct and you don’t have a restraining order out against him or something.” The woman laughed nervously. “He’s coming here to take you home. God, I hope I did the right thing.”

Cheryl opened her mouth to speak, but her voice caught in her throat. She didn’t want to talk. She only wanted to cry. All of the trauma, disappointment, and fear she’d experienced in the past few months wanted to pour itself out onto the ground in front of her. She reached over and took hold of the woman’s arm, looking into her eyes. “Thank you,” she mouthed, her voice still not coming out. She hoped the woman would leave. She wanted to be alone on the side of the road. She wanted to melt into a puddle of slime just like Chloe had.

Heavy, dark clouds covered the stars overhead. Cheryl looked up into the darkness, hoping that, somewhere against the night sky, she could find answers to help her fix this problem. But there were no answers there, just like there were no answers in her mind.
