Chapter Seventeen

THE NEXT morning Derek was gone when I got out of the shower. I wasn’t surprised. He’d barely said anything to me when we woke up. Round two wasn’t something I wanted to face, not when we had a scrimmage to play later in the afternoon. Sleep had been elusive for us.

There was a lot of tossing and turning coming from Derek’s bed. I think I fell asleep somewhere around four a.m. I needed a coffee I.V. to get me through the day.

I headed down to the ballroom for our team breakfast. Derek sat with Mo, Parkie, and Spillie. While there was plenty of room at their table, I decided to sit with the prospects from Team A to continue to give Derek his space.

“Mind if I sit here?” I asked after I loaded my plate with eggs and fresh fruit.

My request must have startled them because six sets of wide eyes stared up at me before Chadster finally spoke up. “No, go ahead.”

I sat down and made with the small talk with the group, trying to put them at ease. I was in the middle of telling the guys to stay loose and have fun when Tally surprised me by joining me instead of sitting with our usual group.

“Don’t listen to anything he says. Laddie is full of shit.” Tally grinned mischievously.

“He’s just jealous that I scored two goals yesterday and he got a zero. A big ‘ole goose egg for his effort,” I replied good-naturedly.

“Just don’t tell these rookies all of our secrets. We don’t want them to take our jobs,” Tally teased.

“We’re not trying to take your jobs,” Pettie (at least I think it was Pettie, not Rigs) said.

“Then you’re not giving it your all,” I said to him. “If you want a spot on this team, you gotta play full tilt. Don’t go easy on the vets. You’re out there fighting for your life.”

“He’s right. Just don’t try to injure anyone,” Tally added.

“Yeah, if you take out Tabs today Mickey will have your balls on a platter.” I said and took a sip of coffee. Our team was up against the Team C that featured Tabs, Duffy, and Eriksen. They also had the Terminator in goal. We had our work cut out for us. Today wouldn’t be an easy day for me on or off the ice. I needed more coffee. It was going to be a long day.

Tally cornered me after breakfast. I should’ve gotten my coffee to go. I wasn’t in the mood to rehash last night, still reeling from my bout with Derek.

He waited until we were alone before the questions started. “Why weren’t you sitting with the others? Don’t tell me that you and Veens are fighting? Did I screw up things for you?”

“He’s pissed that I told you.” I shoved my hands into the pockets of my shorts. “I shouldn’t have told you about him.”

“It’s not your fault. I guessed.”

“He doesn’t quite see it like that.”

“He knows I won’t say anything though.
