Chapter Sixteen

Sasha

Grey Whitfield is a force to be reckoned with.

I’ve never met anyone like her. She says exactly what’s on her mind, straight up, unfiltered. She’s raw; she’s real and unbelievably kind. She waited patiently for me outside Terry’s office, trying not to eavesdrop as he reamed me out. When I walked out twenty minutes later, all broken down and defeated, she was there to help me pick up the pieces.

I can’t stop the move. It’s happening. They’re pulling me away from Brooks with every means at their disposal. The only positive spin that came out of the meeting was that Terry was glad that no one had discovered that we were living in the same apartment building yet, and he congratulated himself on dodging yet another bullet I’d unintentionally placed in the media’s smoking gun.

My mood is somber as I follow Grey inside the elevator. Terry gave me a map of the clubhouse floor, indicating where a private changing area had been installed for me while we were on the road. It’s as far as it possibly can be from the guys’ locker room. For the time being, it’s been fitted with a portable shower unit with its own water heater and refillable tank. Terry also mentioned that Lenore, the hair stylist slash makeup artist who worked on me back at Landry’s ranch, would be a new permanent fixture to my pre- and post-game routines. I’m to be the obedient plastic doll they can sell and nothing more. Terry didn’t even ask how Kyle was doing. It seems that he’s already forgotten about him.

"I know you should be getting ready to take batting practice with the rest of the team, but you look like you could use a breather." Grey hits the button for the ground floor, eyeing me with concern. "Terry really came down hard on you, didn’t he?"

"Yeah, he did," I admit, not having anything to hide from her. She has two perfectly good ears. She heard everything that went on in there.

"If it makes you feel any better, he saw me naked," Grey reveals, shocking me out of my stupor.

My head snaps in her direction, but she continues to face forward, watching the lighted floor numbers above the door click on and off as we descend. "What?" I ask.

"Well, not naked. Topless, to be precise. It’s a long story, but good things never seem to happen in that room. I think it’s cursed." Grey fiddles with the wedding band on her finger as if reassuring herself that it’s still there.

I’m momentarily stunned, contemplating how that could have possibly happened, when the door opens and Grey guides me through it. We’re on the main level of the stadium, near the numerous concession stands, gift shops, and built-in Hard Rock Cafe. I hope she’s not going to ask me to eat anything because I feel even queasier than I did before. The guys are on the field, shagging flies and taking a few swings in the cage. I feel guilty that I’m not out there with them.
