Chapter 34

Another Layer of the Onion

Coop

Sleep was elusive once again for Dean Cooper. His nap on the couch only brought him twenty minutes before his mind started racing again. He passed the evening alternately staring out the front window and patrolling the outside of his home, hoping to see something suspicious that might reveal the killer. Ed Radach’s security team had dwindled in numbers, and as long as neighbors were abiding by the curfew, it would be easy to spot someone prowling around outside. However, he saw nothing alarming. There was absolutely no movement at night, short of a passing patrol composed of Danny Deloach and another member of the Security Group around 2 a.m.

Like clockwork, Coop met with his team leaders in the Butterfield’s garage following the morning meeting. This was their time to share news or concerns related to their areas of responsibility. As Coop listened to them go around the table, he took gulps from his fifth cup of coffee that morning.

Ed Radach flipped through his Steno notepad. “Good news is the firefighter is gelling well with our team. The guys like him and he’s stepped up to fill the gaps. Bad news is the Rios family lost their elderly mother overnight. Seems she died in her sleep. I’ve already talked to Sabrina about organizing a memorial for her.”

“That’s unfortunate, but as long as she wasn’t murdered.”

Sabrina turned her disapproving gaze on him. “Dean! That’s uncalled for!”

“I’m sorry, Sabrina. I don’t know why I said it like that.”

Lena Keys skillfully diverted the conversation back to the issues at hand. “Trash is building up. Before long, we’re going to have a rodent problem, along with other issues. I suggest we start regular hauls to a drop off point, where we bury it or burn it. To make matters worse, Aaron Bishop is being accused of tossing his dog’s waste into his neighbor’s yards.”

“His dog is crapping in their yards?” Ed asked.

“No, I mean tossing it. Like launching it over the fence.”

Tala made a face. “That’s gross!”

“I’ll go have a chat with him,” Ed said with a sigh. “We don’t need someone getting shot over dog turds.”

Tala gave Ed an unapproving stare. “Gross again!”

After the group finished the briefing, the garage was empty except for Sabrina, who remained at the table. She wrote an outline for the pending Rios memorial and lifted her head when she heard Heath’s voice. He stood outside by the Tahoe and asked if he could have a word with her. Sabrina invited Heath inside, and he took a seat in the chair by the outdoor refrigerator.

“What’s on your mind?”

“You know, staying over at Mr. Cooper’s house, I can’t help but notice he is acting like a zombie.”

“Heath, I’m not a big zombie flick person, so you’ll have to expand.”

“He just paces around. I’m talking all night long.”

“He’s been under a tremendous amount of stress. We all have.”

Heath lowered his head and stared at the epoxy-coated garage floor. “Yeah. I guess I just feel sorry for him.
