“It smells like heaven in here, Gran,” Kat said as they entered the kitchen.

“Come have a seat so we can get started. I’m afraid we will lose power soon.” As if on cue, the lights flickered.

“Do you want me to get some candles ready?” Lauren asked.

“Might not be a bad idea.” Gran took a pork chop from the platter and began passing food.

“This all looks and smells terrific, Gran.” Kat speared a pork chop and gave the platter to Lauren. She had just finished pouring gravy on her rice when the power went out.

“How romantic,” Lauren teased. “We get a dinner by candlelight.” She lit the three candles she had placed on the table.

“I am so happy we got the hay in the barn. I couldn’t have done it without y’all’s help,” Kat said. “I couldn’t bear the thought of thousands of dollars of hay ruined by mold.”

Lauren laced her hand over Kat’s. “We were happy to help, but next cut, we need to time better so all three of us can work all day.”

“I won’t argue with that. I’d still be hauling hay if you and Gran hadn’t helped.”

Gran smiled when Kat served herself seconds. “I didn’t have time to bake some dessert.”

“This is more than plenty,” Kat answered. “I’ll get a belly full of desserts tomorrow at homecoming.”

Gran’s smile broadened. “You don’t have to go if you’re not up to it.”

“Are you kidding? I’m not missing out on all that good food. Even if I have to sit through Reverend Franklin’s service, it’s worth it.”

“He’s not that bad,” Gran replied.

“I remember being terrified of him as a kid. That reddish-orange light shone on his bald head as he preached hellfire and brimstone. I could imagine spittle flying out of his mouth as he raved on.”

“That does sound terrifying. I hate I missed that,” Lauren teased. Her family hadn’t been much about attending church when she was growing up. It was one of the few things she and Kat didn’t share.

“He’s toned down a bit from his younger days,” Gran replied.

“Hallelujah,” Kat joked.

A loud crack of thunder filled the room. “I guess I’d better ease up on the church jokes,” Kat said with a grin.

“That was a fantastic meal,” Lauren told Gran and began carrying dishes from the table. She poured Kat a large apple juice and gave it to her.

Kat lifted the glass to Gran. “Doctor’s orders.”

Lauren shook her head. “Is six too early to start on your hair?”

“Not at all. That should give us plenty of time. How about a light breakfast in the morning?”

“There’s gravy left. We could bake some biscuits to go with it,” Kat suggested. “I can do that while Lauren does your hair.”

“You need to sleep in until at least seven to get a good night’s rest,” Lauren said.

“I will,” Kat agreed and handed her the empty glass. “I’ll head up now.”

“I’ll help gran pick up the kitchen and be there,” Lauren stated.

“Nonsense. I’ve got this. You two go.”

“Thanks for everything, Gran,” Kat said and leaned down to kiss her cheek.
