CHAPTER TEN

STILL THURSDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 19th

DARLENE thought about calling Dr. Sterling, again. Maybe he could come and pick them up. She didn’t have to tell him about Carla. Maybe if they could stay at his house for a couple of nights they could come up with a plan to get themselves out of this mess. He doesn’t have to know what happened.

Then, again, maybe I could take a shower with him. He could lather my breasts with soap and push my ass up against the wet tile.

“Darlene! There’s a purse out there! Let’s move!” The girls were in the mall scouting for a purse that had been left behind, or a wallet that had slipped out of someone’s pocket. This one looked very fancy, and it was sitting on a chair in front of Starbucks. Beverly was swift and silent as she grabbed the purse, and headed for the nearest exit carrying the purse like it belonged to her. By previous plan, Darlene and Annie would stay behind to scout for any possible security people who might have spotted Beverly snatching the purse. Or, perhaps, the owner of the purse saw Beverly grab it and would be pursuing her. Darlene and Annie were there, but nothing happened.

Also by a previous plan the girls had a meeting place at a coffee shop several blocks from the mall. Once they all arrived they found $1000 in the purse.

“Shit, look at all of this money.” Annie was wide-eyed.

“Quiet, not so loud,” Beverly cautioned.

Back in his office, Roger was waiting for his 11:00 a.m. appointment with Mr. W. In the meantime, Mr. W. was in a casino having totally forgotten about his 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Sterling.

Following his usual procedure, Roger waited ten minutes in case the person was running late, or had gotten caught in traffic. Then he would call his patient. During the ten-minute wait Roger would most often be reading. Today, he was back to reading Dr. Menninger’s 1954 article on regulatory devices the ego used under stress. He noted that this article also listed pyromania in the same category with compulsive gambling. Both pyromania and compulsive gambling were considered second order devices used by the ego to regulate the person’s stress. The article explained that second order devices were characterized by a detachment from the world of reality, specifically from loved objects, feared objects, and hated objects. This was what Roger had suspected all along was going on for Mr. W. He was using his compulsion to gamble in order to regulate his intolerable feelings. The question was which intolerable feelings did he have difficulty regulating? By his own admission he didn’t know. At least consciously he didn’t know. After ten minutes, he called Mr. W. and got his voice mail. He left a neutral message, although he suspected that Mr. W. was back in the casino.

During the rest of this hour, Roger pulled out his notebook and jotted down some ideas about fire.

<What exactly is our fascination with fire?
