Jake opened his pouch of tobacco and rolled a smoke as he contemplated the news. He was glad that he’d be able spend more time at home with Luke, but disappointed at losing this great income until the next winter rolled around.

There wouldn’t be much available in the way of work at this time of year. All the jobs that could be done in the winter, such as this one, were beginning to shut down. It was too early for the summer jobs. Springtime, or ‘break-up’ as they call it in Alaska, is generally a mess. Construction work doesn’t start for another two or three months when things dry out.

He finished his smoke and tea, brushed his teeth and crawled in the rack. Then he remembered the stick. Shit. He knew he’d never find it again. Exactly what the hell was it, and how did it get there? There was no way he could go back to look for it.
