The cover of Beat the Boots features an illustration of a hand with a hammer striking the word “beat” with a certain amount of force. The eight albums were all issued “as is,” with printing errors on the jackets and spelling mistakes on the inner sleeves. In the spirit of bootlegging, the vinyl boxed set was limited to 600 copies. It also included a “Beat the Boots” T-shirt, as well as a pop-up display of Zappa and the Mothers. The collection was also issued as an eight-CD set, as eight individual CDs, and on cassette. Zappa also licensed the collection to distributors in the UK, Germany, France, and Japan. It may not have put a dent in the black market, but Beat the Boots sold over 20,000 units worldwide and became highly collectible among Zappa fans. Ironically, designer Geoff Gans was nominated for a Grammy Award for best recording package.

The success of Beat the Boots led to the release of a second volume of seven albums in June 1992, simply called Beat the Boots 2. This time, Rhino created a limited-edition eleven-LP boxed set, an eight-CD boxed set, and a seven-cassette set for the fans. Each came with a black beret with the Rhino logo, a pin, and a scrapbook designed by album-cover artist Cal Schenkel. This set contains concert recordings from 1968 to 1976, including the famous Montreux Festival “fire” concert immortalized in Deep Purple’s song “Smoke on the Water.”

In 2009, a digital download version of Beat the Boots III was made available by the Zappa Records label. It features six discs worth of concert recordings from various locations in the United States and Europe, including the last tour in 1988.
