Ten minutes later, seated inside the lobby bar of a luxury hotel across the street from the golfing facility, Jessica took a sip of the cabernet she’d ordered. Busied her hands to keep from touching the compelling man seated close to her.

“You’ve always lived in Royal?” Oliver asked her over the rim of his Scotch before he tested the amber liquid.

There weren’t many patrons at this hour, and they’d taken a corner table in the back. They’d passed a piano on the way to their seats—an upright Kawai in the center of the establishment—though no one currently played the instrument. The chrome-and-concrete bar was minimalist and modern; the tables surrounding it were washed-out shades of pale gray, with white hydrangeas in crystal vases. Pink candles glowed warm on the tabletops, the only hints of color in the monochrome scheme. Their round booth allowed for privacy while also seating her close to the handsome man beside her.

A tingle shot through her, more from the proximity than from the full-bodied wine.

“No. My folks moved here from a ranch in El Paso in the hope of more secure work for my dad. He and my mom are both on staff at the Triple C.” A way of life they fully embraced. Her parents had always been supportive of her need for an education and a world outside the ranch, but they’d also never pushed her in that direction. “They really enjoy caring for the land and living simply.”

No matter what the bank statement said, her dad felt rich in the ways that counted. She admired his grounded values.

“What about you? Is that something you enjoy too?” He leaned forward slightly, the open collar of his gray button-down gaping in a way that made her attention flick briefly to his chest.

For a moment, she imagined herself touching him there, her palms running along the hard wall of muscle. What was it about him that attracted her so thoroughly? She’d never experienced this kind of pull with anyone before. On the plus side, thinking about how much she wanted Oliver was a welcome distraction from the financial disaster back home.

“I don’t dislike it,” she answered carefully, mindful of how she spoke about the lifestyle her family adored. “But music is my real calling.”

“Now the notes makes sense.” His gaze drifted to the side of her face as he reached one finger to trace the outside of her ear.

The touch was light. Barely there. And yet a shiver rolled through her so hard she thought he must surely see it.

“Notes?” She blinked through the heat of her reaction to him, trying to make sense of his words.

“Your earrings.” His smile was warm and inviting. “I noticed them earlier.”

Her heart pounded harder. Between the immediate draw she’d felt toward him
