I do not see how the jury can convict on the evidence of one lying constable. I have no more recollection of making the statement than the paper on the wall. If I have made it I ought to have some recollection of it. I don’t think there is one spectator in court who will agree with this verdict.

The judge assumed the black cap and said:

You have been convicted, and I think properly, of the murder of practically your two children, although the form of the accusation is of one only. The jury has accompanied their verdict with a recommendation of mercy, to mercy upon grounds which are worthy of consideration. It will receive consideration of the proper quarter, to which I shall forward it.
