Nicholson Street today. The author

Eliza recovered her feet and crouched under a table, while Eliza’s husband Frank rushed downstairs, on hearing the sound of gunfire and witnessed an incredible scene with his wife under the table and Whitty standing over her with a gun in his hand. Forsey threw himself upon the man and the two men struggled.

Forsey himself explained what happened next:

Whitty pointed the revolver and was coming for me when I clashed with him. He struggled to get one hand loose but I kept him close to me and prevented him doing so. We wrestled, it must have been for more than five minutes and Whitty seemed determined to try and finish me off.

At last however I succeeded in throwing him on his back and held him tightly down for about twenty minutes when a neighbour came and helped me. The mouth of the revolver was at one time touching my ear and a click on the trigger would have ended my life. As it was however I escaped with a bruise on the head and a cut near my ear.

I knew from the beginning to the end that it was a fight for life or death and to prevent him firing the revolver I buried my thumb deep into his wrist, even when on the floor Whitty struggled fiercely and when assistance came he was overpowered.
