Chapter Fifteen

Snakes in the gold mine

At the tip of Florida, Brigadier General Dobson watched the unloading of troops and armor. It was near 1000 and he had one full division of marines on shore. Unloading now was the Cuban division attached to his force. It seemed like three lifetimes ago when he had met Reaper in Missouri as a colonel. When his unit was pulled out to head to Cuba, Dobson had been summoned to Dallas and thought Fern was going to court-martial him for burning feds at the stake.

Fern didn’t and pinned a star on his collar. Dobson hadn’t wanted to be a colonel, much less a general, but nobody asked for his opinion so he would do the best he could.

A figure strode up beside Dobson and stopped. “They’re gathered, sir,” Master Gunnery Sergeant Major Griss reported. If Dobson was pissed about being promoted to general, Griss was livid getting promoted to division gunnery sergeant major.

Giving a sigh, “Let’s go talk to them,” Dobson said, spinning around heading for his Humvee.

Griss walked with him and was glad a shot hadn’t even been fired at them yet. There wasn’t even radio chatter about them landing at the tip of Florida, but there damn well was chatter about the landing near Pensacola. “I think the reports from our Recon elements are correct, the Brits want to go home,” Griss admitted as they climbed inside and took off with their security detachment.

Dobson had no doubt about that, but wondered how in the hell those in Dallas knew and ordered him to send Marine Recon troops in to make contact. For some reason, he suspected the Sin Eaters were involved and if true, he was even more indebted to them. He’d had his own intelligence section listening in on the British force. There was no doubt morale was low, but nothing they’d intercepted or reported back by Recon troops suggested the Brits wanted to surrender en masse.

Landing in the Everglades was proving a challenge on finding routes out, but the Marines had done it. The hurricane that had hit the Miami area the year of the collapse had essentially wiped the east coast off, from Miami up to West Palm Beach. After the hurricane, the feds had just abandoned the area. Not even gangs inhabited the ruins, but there were people hiding away not wanting to live under the boot of the feds. Still, best estimates put the number under five thousand living in the ruins.

Before the collapse, from Miami to West Palm Beach held over ten million, now less than five thousand lived among the ruins, Dobson thought.

It didn’t take them long to reach the meeting spot south of Homestead. Homestead suffered minor damage from the hurricane, but had still been abandoned by the feds. When his vehicle came to a stop, he saw a formation of British officers standing at attention under a pavilion. The UK flag was flying from a staff but a white flag was flying higher, waving lazily in the wind.
