The entire journey up Levent, Leah kept her eyes glued on everything the carriage passed by. The houses became prettier the farther up the street they traveled. Here, the red facades had been smoothed, making the houses look soft and inviting. Markets filled with people, and stalls had colorful garments that ladies and men bought. They passed a stall where a long dress swayed with a breeze. The fabric flowed like water by the wind; it even looked like clear water. Had they not been on their way, she would’ve stopped to touch the dress. For now, she gazed at it longingly.

They neared the last leg of the journey, passing a couple of guards standing by rough cliffs rising above the street. She peered backward and lost her breath.

Below her, the houses she’d passed were tiny dots. Was this what birds saw when they flew above the city? Small specks, some moving and some standing still? In every direction, Levent grew into the grasslands beyond the protective walls.

The houses at the very top, in the area called Riverview, were as big as ships. She counted some five, six, and even seven stories tall, white buildings surrounding her. Compared to home, the houses had large open areas between them, where plants and grass grew.

Ladies and lords walked along the carriage. The dresses the women wore were even more beautiful than the ones she’d seen before. One of them carried a dark green gown that hugged all of her tight. She looked like a tree walking along the street.

The carriage halted, and a woman dressed in the same sort of beige rags as Leah did not waste any time. “Are you Leah?”

Leah stepped off the carriage, her bottom sleeping. “Yes.”

“I’m Karly, your supervisor. Come with me.”
