Come Out Where Ever You Are
Madame Dubuseâ stared out of the window. She took a bite of the chicken she was carrying in a satchel that sheâd made out of a few napkins. She felt like there was no use for all of the food to go to waste, so she grabbed whatever remained on the tablecloth and made herself a to-go plate. She figured Jessica and KJ might be hungry, so she made sure she grabbed enough for them. She went into the kitchen and took a carton of milk as well. She hadnât been to the market, and business hadnât been as lucrative as it had been in the past. People were starting to put more of their faith in Jesus Christ and leaving the dark magic behind them.
The car pulled up in front of the shop, and Madame Dubuseâ stared at it strangely. Something didnât seem right, but she couldnât quite figure it out. She begged the driver for a cigarette before she closed the door. He handed one to her, then drove off, leaving her on the side of the road. It was very dark because the street light had blown out. Madame Dubuseâ had complained to the city officials but no one had come to fix it yet. She strolled across the street and walked up her steps. She went over to the door and noticed that it was open. She looked around suspiciously because she remembered locking the door before she left. Maybe⦠nah, she thought as she pulled the door all the way open. She raised her cane before walking inside. If anyone jumped out at her, she wanted to be prepared to swing.
Madame Dubuseâ walked inside of her shop and searched around the room. She noticed some books, papers, and pictures scattered about the floor. It looked like her shop had been ransacked.
Madame Dubuseâ walked further into the shop and headed toward the table. She noticed her chest and the lock lying on the floor. It became clear to her what had happened.
âJessica!â called Madame Dubuseâ.
âAre you awake? I brought some food and milk for the little boy.â
There was no answer, and this concerned her. Maybe someone broke in and took them, or maybe Cynthia sent some people to get them while they were at dinner. At any rate, Madame Dubuseâ decided to go upstairs to check for the children. They both might be sleep, and thatâs why they couldnât hear her calling them from down in the shop.
