Skinner wanted the Department of Animal Husbandry to have a dedicated facility, just as the Department of Agronomy had the Wilson Farm and the Department of Horticulture had its farm. As Skinner searched for his “dream” research location, he came across a 422-acre farm owned by Chris G. Kalberer that was located just two miles north of campus.36 The Kalberer Farm had everything Skinner wanted in a property. There were two homes, numerous barns, a hog house, and corn cribs on the site. And outside of a few acres of woods, orchards, and pastures, the entire farm was under cultivation.37

The university trustees approved the purchase of the farm at their meeting on April 25, 1923, but they had a legal obligation to secure the approval of the Indiana governor before making the purchase official. On May 31, 1923, a special committee to the board of trustees provided this account of the inspection process:

Before purchasing this farm, a committee consisting of Hon. Ray Morgan, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Henry County; Senator Murray Barker, Chairman of the Agricultural Committee of the Senate, Boone County; Hon. Harry G. Leslie, Benton County; John E. Wilson, prominent livestock farmer Montgomery County; Elwood Morris, a large farmer of Hancock County, were asked to inspect this farm and to make a statement with reference to it. This committee recommended strongly that this farm should be purchased for livestock experimental work…. On Sunday, April 29, Governor [Warren] McCray spent the afternoon with the committee and Dean Skinner and inspected this farm. The Governor was impressed with the location of this farm and its value as an experimental tract. He consented to the purchase of the farm.38
