By the time one o’clock rolls around, my stomach is tangled like the rubber bands on my desk.

“Oh, it’s nice out today,” Roseanne says when she comes through the office door, peeling off her jacket. “I haven’t made you late, have I?”

“No, no.” I grab my coat and handbag. “I’m not exactly in a hurry to get there.”

“It will be fine. Though I still say he’s using the kids as an excuse to see you.”

I give her “the look.”

She laughs. “Okay, I’ll behave. You’d better get over there. Have a good lunch.”

Upon entering the lodge, I hardly have time to catch my breath before a hostess walks up to me and whisks me away to the restaurant.

“Mr. Amorini will be joining you shortly,” she says while ushering me over to a secluded corner table.

She hands me a menu. Right on her heels is the server who takes my drink order. These people are on the ball, I’ll give them that.

Instrumental music plays softly overhead, mingling with the quiet murmuring at tables in the room. How did my life get in such a mess? One minute I’m having a wonderful life with the man of my dreams, and the next minute I’m alone, running a business by myself, seeing someone new, then housing an aging father and a pregnant, separated-from-her-husband daughter.

While sipping on my sweetened iced tea, I attempt to sort through my life. Before I know it, thirty minutes have passed with no sign of Marco. I’m a little irritated that he doesn’t think my time matters too. I don’t have all day to waste here at his restaurant.

“Excuse me,” I call out to a nearby server.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Mr. Amorini is obviously running late, and I need to get back to the office, so I’d like to go ahead and order, please.”

“Certainly. I’ll send someone right over.”

He disappears, and within a few minutes a young woman appears and takes my order. The longer I sit here, the more irritated I become. I’m on my second glass of iced tea. If I keep this up, I’ll be too full to eat. What if Marco stands me up? Not that we have anything going on here, but—oh, what is the matter with me?

Just then Marco steps into the room, and I try to calm my jittery heart.

“Sorry I’m late,” he says, sliding into his chair. “There was a backlog of cases in court this morning, so it took longer than usual.” He grabs his menu.

Okay, so I overreacted.

“Bad week for couples, huh?”

He puts down his menu and looks up at me. “History tells me we’d better not go there.” A twinkle touches his eyes. “Have you been waiting long?”

Only long enough for Noah to build the ark, but don’t give it another thought.

“Not that long,” I say. “I did just place my order, though, because I wasn’t sure how long you would be, and I have to get back to work.”

“I understand.” He studies the menu a moment, then claps it shut, tells the server what he wants, and hands the menu back.
