BRUCE
By Steve Stred
Bruce wakes up to the sound of his cell phone pretending to be a rooster. He wakes up as he does every day, with a smile on his face, and his head unclouded and optimistic. Bruce loves life. The beauty he thinks, to everything, is that everyone knows he loves life and he brightens everyone elseâs days.
He reaches over to the side table to the right of his bed and swipes his phone to stop the barn animal from continuing on. He flops back over onto his bed and smiles again, enjoying the feeling of the sun on his face. With nothing on his agenda today he noted, he could realistically lie here all day and no one would mind. He stretched while he lay in bed and determined he would have to get up and head to the washroom to relieve his bladder sooner than later, but at this point 5 more minutes of soaking up the morning sun would be just fine.
As he relaxed and pulled the blanket closer into his body he started to feel a sensation in his feet. At first it was almost imperceptible. Just a small twitch. Not even a twitch, a tingle. Like one single solitary cell of his toe was going to sleep. But he had to move his foot to get rid of the feeling. Sun pelted him with its glorious rays. Maria the maid would be by in about 30 minutes to start tidying up and doing her usual house care routine and Jeffrey, his assistant would be by in 45 minutes to go over business meetings he would have the rest of the week.
There it was again. A small irritating tingle just on the outside edge of his left big toe. It made him slightly move his foot so that it would go away. How annoying. Here he was just trying to relax and enjoy 5 more minutes of glorious sunshine on this amazing morning before having to face the day head on, and this little tingle kept disrupting him.
His bladder was now starting to let him know it was time to rise and shine and to release the building pressure sooner than previously thought. He started to shift his weight to rise up onto his butt when the tingle became an excruciating stabbing pain all through his left foot.
âAHHHHHHHHâ he screamed out as the pain threw him back on the bed. He grabbed his foot with both hands and began rubbing it furiously, in a sad attempt to reduce the excruciating pain. As it subsided he sat up and looked at his foot, thinking for sure that it would be bleeding or have some sign or mark to distinguish why he had so much pain. But there was nothing. His foot sadly was just his foot.
He lay back placing his foot gingerly back down onto the bed. It felt totally normal again. There wasnât even a tingle or twitch. His bladder practically howled at him now. He glanced over at his cell phone on the side table.
