Dandy drew open the door, her cheeks flushed pink and her eyes gleaming. âI know I shouldnât be astonished by all this,â she said by way of greeting. She shook her head. âThe world works in mysterious ways though, doesnât it? Come in, come in.â
She drew them deeper into her small, dark house and ushered them into the living room. âThese are the people I was telling you about,â she said to Rue who looked wide-eyed at the sudden crush of strangers in the room.
âThis is Selena Wilde,â Dandy said. âShe knew your mother and has come all the way from England to look for you.â
Rue swallowed, shook her head.
Had Clover been right after all. Was this the lady?
Her voice was little more than a croak when she spoke, and she was light-headed. âAre you related to us?â she asked, dazed. âMum said she had relatives in England or somewhere.â She pressed back against the couch, shaking her head. Clover was fast asleep under a knitted Afghan, her own blanky tucked up under her, one small fist curled around it, and Rue was glad. She needed a minute to take this in.
Selena perched on the edge of one of the armchairs, and the others found themselves holding their breath at the scene.
âWe are related,â Selena said. âAlthough precisely how, I couldnât tell you right now.â
Rue frowned. âI donât understand.â Then she cleared her throat, rubbed at the hairs standing on end under the pyjama sleeves. âMum died three years ago. Did you like, only just hear, or something?â
Selena nodded. âI only just found out,â she said. âI came as soon as I could.â
âSelenaâs only been in the country three days,â Tara blurted. âAnd sheâs spent almost every minute looking for you.â
Rue turned her head and looked at the woman who had spoken, at the rain-specked jeans and untidy hair pulled back into a hasty bun. âWho are you?â she asked.
Tara grimaced. âI ah, run the bed and breakfast where Selena is staying.â
That was peculiar, Rue thought, bamboozled beyond belief. Wasnât it peculiar? She looked at the third person staring down at her. âAnd who are you?â she asked. He didnât look like he was a social worker, but you couldnât trust anyone, could you? She glanced over at Dandy, knowing she trusted her.
Which was why sheâd agreed these people could come and talk to her in the first place. Because Dandy had said they were good people and were looking hard for them.
Other than that, none of it really made much sense.
Damien grinned at her. âDamien Murray,â he said. âAt your service.â He laughed. âI actually drive Miz W around.â
Rue looked from one to the other. âThatâs weird,â she said. âYou know thatâs weird, right?â
Damien laughed again. âMaybe, but weâve been plenty busy trying to track you down â you gave that Heather woman a good run-around.â
Rueâs face fell. âYouâve talked to her,â she said, looking back at Selena. âI donât know whatâs going to happen,â she said.
Selena shook her head.
