Independence Day

I love walking around during Fourth of July celebrations. Buntings, banners, and old historical flags from our country’s beginnings are flown with pride outside of many homes. And there’s nothing more festive than a perfect display of fireworks!

STEP 1

With a pencil, sketch your houses, path, and ground. Sketch some architectural details on your houses too.

STEP 2

With a large flat-tipped brush, paint the sky navy blue. Create gradients at the top and corners by using a darker color on an almost-dry flat-tipped brush. Use a medium flat- or round-tipped brush to paint the ground a dark emerald green. Paint a taupe path using the same method.

Mix a bit of black into each color to create colors for shading. Shade the grass in the foreground and in the areas where the houses’ entry paths will be. Shade the outer edges of the path too. Paint the house shapes and roofs, using bright colors such as mustard gold, periwinkle, and a brilliant almost-white. Let your painting dry.
