Chapter 12
After talking to the Captain, Henry had gone back down below to sit in the shade with the others and relay what he'd been told. He was glad to be off the raft, but he couldn't shake the feeling that theyâd traded one dangerous situation for another. Not that he thought Captain Taylor, or his father would harm them, but he didn't want to stay out here any longer than they had to. And the Captain had made it clear that they weren't leaving the water until they got their shark.
What if they never did?
They were obsessed and Henry didn't even want to speculate on how far they would go to get their prize.
This all felt like some sort of strange nightmare.
Yet, no matter how many times he pinched himself, he was still here, stuck on a fishing boat in the Atlantic Ocean.
The others seemed to feel the same way. Tyson mainly talked to Aaron, who they all quickly discovered was nothing more than a pencil-necked kiss-ass. Henry was glad he hadn't been friendlier with the man back in the office. The only thing Henry couldn't figure out was why Aaron had latched onto Tyson, but whatever the reason, he knew it couldn't be good. The man was a shit-stirrer, plain and simple. Henry had seen his type before and their situation was dire enough without someone stirring the pot.
And then there was Tim.
Well, Tim did nothing. He seemed to have resigned himself to the fact that Captain Taylor wasn't going straight back to shore and had opted to sleep the rest of the day. He barely even talked.
Henry had only glimpsed the man when he came out to eat or use the bathroom. Other than that, Tim lay on his bunk bundled up under blankets. Tim's demeanor on the few occasions he left his cocoon had been completely disheartening. The amiable smile and optimism that Henry had always gotten from his friend had vanished. Tim looked like he'd aged ten years and seemed like a husk of his former self.
Henry just hoped that with time, Tim would be okay. He hoped they'd all be okay.
Henry was lucky. Through this whole thing, Cheryl had been his rock. Not with words. No, they had talked little after they were cast adrift and barely at all after the rescue. It was her presence; it was the little reassuring pats and squeezes. Little things she did that let him know for sure that things could be normal once again. She, too, had spent most of the day in her bunk, but he couldn't blame her. There really wasn't anything for them to do on this ship, other than stay out of the way.
What was really nagging Henry, though, as he sat alone at the booth and heard the constant whispering coming from Tyson and Aaron from back in the galley, was that he felt useless.
On this fishing boat, he was just sitting here, not doing a damn thing while above deck, two men now held all their fates resting in the palms of their callused hands.
