CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“What’s the big emergency? I’m still getting caught up from my Australia trip.” Reggie entered Trevor’s office with a sinking feeling in her gut. It had started with her brother’s urgent text of Mayday—almost certainly not a reference to the current month of the year—and had grown more pronounced with every step she’d taken through the nearly empty executive floor.

“Oh, hey. How was it Down Under?” Trevor wore a confused expression, and Reggie wasn’t sure if this meant he’d forgotten why he summoned her or if he’d just wanted to say hello.

“It was two weeks of cold weather and meetings that could have been emails. Kind of like this could’ve been, apparently.” Reggie tossed her hands in the air, more exasperated at her brother than usual. “It’s two o’clock on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. The office is already a ghost town. Can this honestly not wait until after the holiday?”

The haunted look on Trevor’s face told her the answer was no. “I have two words for you. Know what they are?”

“Ice cream?” Reggie guessed hopefully. “There’s a double scoop of Kahlua chip from John’s Drive-in with my name on it, and I intend to be on my way to collect it as soon as Gwen gets here.”

“Braving Memorial Day in the Hamptons with the new lady friend, eh?” Trevor’s eyes widened as he shook his head. “She must’ve been good and pissed at you to get you to agree to that. Can’t blame her, really.”

“Why would Gwen be mad at me?” Reggie’s insides quivered. She’d spent two weeks justifying to herself why leaving had been okay. It had nothing to do with the kiss she and Gwen had shared, or the overwhelming temptation she’d faced during Gwen’s teasing late night phone call. She’d had important business to attend to. But the look her brother was giving her said all that self-delusion had been in vain.

“You left for Australia, what, the day after your whole relationship bombshell hit the tabloids? For two weeks?” Trevor tapped his fingers on the desktop, waiting for her to catch up. Each rapping sound drove the words deeper until they finally hit home.

“That probably wasn’t the best timing on my part.” An understatement if there ever was one. She’d flown halfway around the world and left Gwen alone to deal with the aftermath, both in the press and her own emotions. Even for a fake girlfriend, Reggie’s move had been really shitty. She took one last stab at self-redemption. “It was an important trip, though. I couldn’t put it off.”

“You told me it could’ve been an email.” Trevor tilted his head, studying her in an uncomfortably penetrating way. “Did you get cold feet? Is that why you ran off?”

“No. Of course not.” The idea was preposterous, yet suddenly, Reggie was reminded of that feeling of panic she’d had after hanging up the phone call with Gwen. The one where Gwen had been naked. And wet. And completely inaccessible, no matter how much Reggie might wish otherwise.
