Chapter Sixteen
Jason
I smiled as Maxâs name popped up on my cell screen. Weâd spent the last few days texting each other. It was comfortable, normal and not forced, and if I was quite honest, hot as hell.
We hadnât talked on the phone yet, so seeing his name caught me off guard, but it was welcome.
âHey,â I answered playfully.
âJason.â The tone of his voice tore my heart to pieces. Something wasnât right.
âItâs my dad. Heâs sick.â That was all I needed to hear before I turned my car around and headed to his house.
âIâm on my way. Is Melanie there with you?â Okay, my insecurities were showing. I hoped that I was the first person Max called. That when he thought of someone bringing him comfort, the first person he thought of was me.
âNo. I called you. I need you.â The words were simple but despite the circumstances, they meant so much. This wasnât about Max and me. It was about his father, and heâd chosen to reach out to me to comfort him, to be his strength, and that was exactly what I was going to do.
Within ten minutes Iâd pulled up to his house, and what I saw broke me. Max sat on his couch, his eyes red-rimmed and swollen from all the tears he had let fall. I didnât say anything. I simply placed my wallet and keys on the side table and held him. I held him as he wept. Each sob, I let soak into me.
âI wish I could take the pain away. I know what itâs like.â I let Max go and he looked at me, sadness permeating his perfect face.
âI figured. Thatâs why I called you.â A small smile curved on his lips. âPlus you make me feel.â He paused for a minute. âSafe. Like I can say and be who I am and it doesnât matter to you. That you wonât judge me.â
I didnât say anything. I wanted him to open up and share what made him comfortable.
âHe has lung cancer. Can you believe it?â He laughed. âA man who never smoked a day in his life getting lung cancer. Seems wrong.â He shook his head. âThatâs life though, right? Tons of shit that doesnât make any sense.â Max reached out and touched my cheek. âJust like us.â
âHuh?â I asked.
âWe donât make sense at all. Youâre a CEO and embrace who you are. And then thereâs me, a mechanic whoâs been hiding behind a woman I donât want and in love with a man whoâs too good to be true.â
I didnât quiet process his words. I stared at him as his eyes bored into me.
âYou love me?â I breathed the words, like a secret only for us to share.
âI do.â His words were forceful, but they were true. There was something laced underneath those words, something that left me on edge.
âStrip.â My hesitation and doubt washed away at his demand.
âWhat?â I asked, stunned.
âI need this. I need to feel you.â He ripped the shirt off me.
