Seeing these places again could only emphasise the stark differences between the first and this second war, as those in his party who had stood in its trenches could never stop reminding themselves. Shaking their heads in astonishment it was still almost too incredible to take in — that their corporal Adolf Hitler had achieved in a matter of weeks what the German High Command had failed to do in four years.

But two days in ‘memory lane’ and three hours in Paris would not prove enough. He had discussed the idea of a victory parade in the French capital but had decided against it — ‘I am not in the mood for a victory parade. We aren’t at the end yet,’ he told the Grand Duke and Speer, reminding himself in so saying that the war was still not over.

There was still that man Churchill to reckon with, and there could be no peace with the British — or anywhere else in the new Europe Hitler dreamed about — so long as he was growling defiance across the Channel. But how to get rid of him was a question to which as yet he had no answer.
