Callum came and stood next to me, crossing his arms over his chest. I forced my gaze away from his biceps. He shook his head with that small, but—I realized now—beautiful, smile on his face. It almost stopped me in my tracks how he looked at me then. Not like he hated me, wanted me gone, or wished I wasn’t there at all. His expression was all surprised admiration, and for one of the first times ever, I felt like I’d really accomplished something. Not just since I’d arrived in Guyana—in my entire life.

“What’s the smile for?” I asked as I stepped a little closer to him.

“Nothing. I just think Dabu might be growing on you, is all.”

I stood beside him and mimicked his pose, crossing my arms and watching Arielle and Lena splash each other with the last of the drops from the “shower.”

“Maybe I couldn’t deal with how filthy you get in Guyana, even with sponging off.”

“Or maybe you’re ready to start doing some good work.”

Lena still hadn’t stopped smiling. “Do you think we could use it to heat water for washing clothes, too? Cleaning the bathroom? I mean, of course we could! God, I’ve missed hot water.”

Lena’s excitement even rubbed off on Arielle. “I could give up a dozen more jugs or so. I’ll help you fill them and haul them out before you leave with Callum if you want, Sofia.”

This was her peace offering, I knew, but it was also a test. Would I agree to do more work than I absolutely had to? Would I take ownership of a project? Would I be grateful for her help?

So I beamed. “I really could use some help. Thanks.”
